Friends, you may have seen news about the Nashville Statement, a document written by some prominent Evangelical leaders that condemns and excludes LGBTQ persons in the name of Jesus. As pastors to Princeton Presbyterians and the Breaking Bread community, we wanted to take a moment to say that the Nashville Statement does not reflect the Good News of Jesus Christ.

At Breaking Bread, we often sing, “God welcomes all, strangers and friends, God’s love is strong and it never ends.” We welcome and celebrate queer siblings in Christ and the gifts they bring to our fellowship. They lead our worship with sermons, hymns, and prayers. The Good News of Jesus continues to surprise us with the depth and breadth of God’s love, especially when we gather around Jesus’ table as members of one another, and members of Christ’s Body.

There is much more to be said about loving, affirming, and celebrating LGBTQ persons as beloved children of God, but today we wanted to make it plain that we celebrate you and we love you, even as we have much to learn. Transgender, gender queer, all LGBTQ Christians are a gift and a blessing to the Church. We pray that God will continue to shape our fellowship to reflect further the breadth and length and height and depth of the love of Christ, a love that surpasses all human knowledge (Ephesians 3:18-19).
